The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 will cause a splash in 2025, but not for the reasons enthusiasts were hoping. According to a source, Samsung is abandoning the under-display camera (UDC) of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 in favor of a conventional punch hole camera on the interior main screen. The change, reminiscent of the special-edition Galaxy Z Fold 6 SE, makes photo quality paramount over a screen that is seamlessly integrated.

The move comes after Samsung was not satisfied with the UDC’s poorer photo shooting. Although the Fold 6 had a punch hole on its outer screen, the UDC on the main screen faltered when it came to video calls and selfies. The punch hole on the Fold 7 guarantees clearer images, but with the added visible distraction of the crease display.
Samsung’s decision is at odds with Apple’s path. The 2025 iPhone 18 will take a punch hole with under-display Face ID, which paves the way for a notchless iPhone 20 in 2027. Samsung might come back to UDCs when the technology has aged, but in the meantime, Fold 7 customers have to accept the punch hole.
What’s New with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Its Siblings?
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is more than a change in cameras—it’s larger, with more screen space than the previous model. Fueled by the Snapdragon 8 Elite, the same chip used in the Galaxy S25 series, it’ll compete with the Oppo Find N5 and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. The increased screen space balances the punch hole’s footprint space, making productivity and media consumption better.
In the meantime, the Galaxy Z Flip 7, which arrives concurrently with the Fold 7, can utilize Samsung’s Exynos 2500 processor on some markets. This budget-friendly gesture might sustain the Flip 7 in the clamshell foldable market. A budget Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE is also rumored, possibly announced at Galaxy Unpacked 2025.
Samsung’s foldable lineup is evolving rapidly, with the Fold 7 SE’s design influencing the flagship. While the punch hole may disappoint fans craving a pristine display, the Fold 7’s performance upgrades and larger screen make it a powerhouse. Expect more details at Samsung’s July 2025 event, where Project Moohan may also shine.
